Colca Canyon is a magnificent natural wonder located in southern Peru, near the city of Arequipa. It is one of the deepest canyons in the world, reaching a depth of 3,270 meters (10,725 feet). The canyon is carved by the Colca River, which runs through the canyon and is a lifeline for the local communities living in the area.
The canyon is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including the Andean condor, one of the largest flying birds in the world. The condors can be seen soaring high above the canyon, providing a breathtaking sight for visitors. The canyon is also home to a number of other bird species, as well as llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas, which are native to the Andean region.
In addition to the stunning natural scenery, Colca Canyon is also home to a number of traditional Andean villages, where visitors can learn about the local culture and way of life. These villages offer a glimpse into a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
A trip to Colca Canyon is a must-do for anyone visiting Peru, offering a unique and unforgettable experience of natural beauty, wildlife, and cultural immersion. Whether you are an avid hiker or just want to take in the stunning scenery, Colca Canyon is sure to leave a lasting impression.
We will pick you up from your hotel very early to depart from Arequipa towards the city of Chivay, on a 3-hour road trip. Let’s say that the full-day Colca Canyon tour begins with our arrival in Yanque, where we will have breakfast. From here, with some refueling due to the early wake-up call and the long journey, we will continue our journey to the Cruz del Cóndor, a nesting place for these birds that can measure up to 3 meters with their wings extended. We can walk along the viewpoint and observe them in flight. Then, we will continue by vehicle through Choquetico, Maca, and Antahuilque, a viewpoint from where we can appreciate the Colca Valley in all its splendor and the pre-Inca terraces that are still used for the cultivation of grains and other crops.
Our next stop is the Chacapi hot springs, where we can relax for an hour. Afterwards, we will go back to Chivay, where we will stop for lunch at a tourist restaurant (S/40 per person). After this, we will take our vehicle to start the return trip to Arequipa, not without making a couple of stops at the Mirador de los Volcanes, located at 4800 meters of altitude and from where we have a privileged view of the volcanoes that surround the area. Likewise, we will stop at the Pampa Cañahuas National Reserve, a wetland where vicuñas and alpacas can be seen. Later on, we will not make any more stops until we reach the center of Arequipa, where our tour ends.
*During the visit to the Condor viewpoint, you will have the possibility to take advantage of the time in that place, or to visit the Pinchollo lagoon, where Andean birds and a cactus forest can be observed.
